Karen Von Damm (1955-2008)
Karen Von Damm passed away on Friday, August 15 after battling an illness for several months. Karen earned international renown for her research in geochemistry and was one of the world's leading authorities on oceanic hydrothermal vent systems. Her research was fundamental to defining the basic chemistry of the oceans. For her longstanding and excellent research and service contributions to the scientific community, Karen was elected a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 2002, and just this year was elected as a Fellow of both the European Association of Geochemistry and The Geochemical Society. We were fortunate to have Karen as a colleague and professor here at UNH and we will miss her. Donations can be given to the Karen Von Damm Memorial Scholarship, University of New Hampshire, Department of Earth Sciences, James Hall, Durham, NH 03824.
A moving tribute to Karen's life by Rachel Haymon can be found on the Geochemical Society web page.
