Since 2001, more than 400 students who were successful in general or organic chemistry at UNH have volunteered to help their peers (8000 to date) become stronger learners. This is not a tutoring program. In groups of about 6 students and one leader, the guiding principle is to make thinking visible while working on challenging problems, emphasizing process not just content. Leaders take a concurrent course on human learning and group dynamics, while also reviewing chemistry content. Senior leaders become mentors for new leaders and coordinators to help run the program.
The program began 22 years ago, spearheaded by Professor Chris Bauer with National Science Foundation support; the work is now supported primarily by the Chemistry Department.
