Power Outage Emergencies

A power outage in Parsons Hall can result in hazardous conditions in the laboratories and eventually throughout the building.  If the power does not return within 10 minutes, evacuate the building.  The Building Emergency Coordinator with the assistance of the Wing and Floor Leaders will make a verbal announcement to evacuate.

Secure the Lab before Evacuation, if possible:

  • Discontinue all work in fume hoods and cap all open containers.
  • Close hood sashes, lab refrigerators and freezers.
  • Switch off equipment and heat sources that should not run unsupervised when the power returns.
  • Make sure experiments are stable and will not create uncontrolled hazards while unattended.

Extended power outages in Parsons Hall require a full building evacuation. Fire Doors will automatically close. No re-entry into the building until 20 MINUTES after the power is returned to the building. This gives the air handling systems time to clear the air. The Emergency Coordinator, Wing and Floor Leaders will provide notification when it is safe to return to the building.

  • After returning to the building, check equipment and reset/restart equipment as necessary.
  • Check that fume hoods are operating properly.
  • Recalibrate and reprogram equipment as necessary.
  • Notify EHS with any issues: 603-862-4041
