ECE Department Faculty P&T Procedures

P&T Committee Procedures for the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (Promulgated (1993), Modified and Approved February 9, 2010, Modified February 13, 2024)

Preamble

The P&T Committee Procedures for the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering are governed by the P&T procedures of the University of New Hampshire

Procedure

  1. The P&T Committee, which evaluates Associate Professors for tenure and/or promotion to Full Professor, consists of the Full Professors of the Department.
  2. The P&T Committee, which evaluates Assistant Professors for tenure and promotion to Associate Professor, consists of the Associate and Full Professors of the Department.
  3. The Department Chairperson will, in May of each year, assemble the two P&T committees for the purpose of making an initial decision as to whether it is appropriate to begin any formal evaluation procedures.  At this time, candidates may be asked for further information and for their feeling of readiness regarding evaluation procedures.  Also, any faculty member may request that a personal formal evaluation be made. (May)
  4. If the Department Chairperson, in concert with a P&T Committee, decides that a formal evaluation will be made, the following procedures will apply.
    1. The candidate will submit a list of outside reviewers. In a separate process, the P&T Committee will also make a list of reviewers. The P&T Committee will then select several reviewers from each list, and the Department Chairperson will request recommendation letters from those reviewers. The P&T Committee recognizes that evaluation letters are the cornerstone to the package; therefore, the package must contain the minimum number of evaluation letters suggested by the Provost’s Office (typically 5).  The P&T Committee recognizes that the applicant may have collaborators; close collaborators can have the appearance of bias, so careful thought should be given to collaborations when reviewers are chosen.  In any case, the relation of the reviewer to the candidate should be made clear in the package.  It is strongly felt that the candidate’s dissertation advisor should not be one of the essential reviewers; however, if their input is sought, they could be included.  Letters will also be requested from students the candidate has taught, and from UNH professionals with whom the candidate has worked. (Summer)
    2. The candidate, with the guidance of the Department Chairperson, will prepare the “candidate portion” of the UNH P&T document. (Early September)
    3. The Department Chairperson will query each faculty member not on the P&T Committee concerning the pending case. (Early September)
    4. When the outside reviewer letters, the candidate’s P&T file, teaching evaluations, and all other appropriate information is assembled, the Department Chairperson will call the P&T Committee together to discuss the candidate and vote on the P&T Committee recommendations. (October)
    5. After the vote, various members of the committee will write appropriate evaluation sections of the P&T document (Teaching, Scholarly Activities, Service). The Department chairperson will coordinate this process. (Late October)
    6. One P&T Committee member will summarize the committee’s decision for the P&T document. All P&T Committee members must read, approve, and sign this summary. (November)
    7. The Department Chairperson will write a personal evaluation for the P&T document, assemble the document, and present it to the college Dean. (Late November)
