More about Adele’s research:
Red pine stands occur on dry rocky outcrops and ridges in the White Mountains, and some are surprisingly old. Frequent and mostly low severity fires with heterogeneous burn patterns were defining characteristics of the historic fire regimes which maintained these small inclusions within other forest types. In the absence of fire, structural and compositional transitions are compromising the future of these stands and prescribed fire will be important in restoration efforts.
