SSC Seminar: Cross-Scale Modeling of Storm-Time Radiation Belt Variability

Wednesday, October 04, 2023 - 3:10 p.m. to 4:10 p.m.

Zoom online

Speaker: Adam Michael, Johns Hopkins - APL

Abstract: Relativistic electrons in Earth’s radiation belt exhibit large flux variations on rapid time scales of minutes to days during geomagnetic storms. Many competing acceleration and loss processes contribute to the dynamic variability of the radiation belts; however, distinguishing the relative contribution of each mechanism remains a major challenge as they often occur simultaneously and over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales Numerical simulations are in a unique position to help address this; however, it requires a first-principles model capable of capturing the multiscale nature of the problem.
