Ocean Pioneer DanaRose
DanaRose Brown is a one of a dozen students to be part of the inaugural class of the Bachelor of Science degree in Ocean Engineering. The New Jersey native and member of the UNH track & field team discusses why she chose ocean engineering and UNH.

What activities were you involved with in high schools? Did they influence your choice in major or UNH?

In high school, I was involved in multiple sports, National Honor Society, and a club/team called Envirothon. Envirothon is an environmental-themed competition, and probably had the largest impact on my choice of major because of its connection to science.

Why did you choose Ocean Engineering as a major?

I originally was interested in majoring in Oceanography; however, when I heard about UNH's Ocean Engineering major I felt that the mixture of both engineering and oceanography in one major would offer more opportunities for research, internships, and jobs.

Why did you choose UNH?

After a visit last fall and tour of the Ocean Engineering facilities, I became very interested in UNH's Ocean Engineering program - which is the main reason I chose to attend UNH.

How does it feel to be part of the first inaugural class of Ocean Engineer Majors at UNH?

I feel that being a part of the first class of Ocean Engineer Majors is a great opportunity and I am very excited to see how the program grows over the next 4 years.

What are your goals as a student at UNH?

At UNH, I am hoping to get involved in as many clubs and research opportunities as possible and work hard to obtain high grades in my classes.

What are you looking forward the most about being an Ocean Engineering major?

I am looking forward to the wide range of career choices and being able to choose a track within the Ocean Engineering field to focus on.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I am plan to attend graduate school and then would like to work in a field relating to beach replenishment.

What has your experience/what are your thoughts about UNH in the short time you’ve been here?

My experience at UNH has been great so far and I am looking forward to discovering all that UNH as to offer!

What are you looking forward to most in your freshman year?

I am really looking forward to getting involved in everything that I can and am especially excited about the school spirit at UNH.
